TRENDING: #ALSIceBucketChallenge

Yes, I maybe late to write but this challenge is getting viral and spreading around the globe in just a span of a month. I already noticed this hashtag: #ALSIceBucketChallenge weeks ago from posts of some big celebrities in the US on Instagram and Facebook (since I am not really fond of checking my Twitter account anymore. Hehe).

I did not literally understand it at first so I just ignored it. But last week, the challenge was already spreaded and taken by some Filipino celebrities who also post of their video clips on their social media.

So, I was curious enough to know and at least understand what’s happening in the world.

Today, I watch some people who were “NOMINATED” and “DID” the challenge. It started when I noticed John Mayer’s 2-minute video of him playing his friend’s music, Jason Becker who nominated him to do the challenge. Since I am already used of seeing local actors and celebrities doing it, I was amazed that even some business tycoon did the challenge. One I saw on the news is Andrew Tan, currently, the 3rd richest man in the Philippines. Yeah! Not jus him, but I also watched the Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg and the living richest man in the world, CEO and founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates doing the challenge themselves. Gates was nominated by Zuckerberg. I was wondering how much money they donate. Hehe

Amongst the cool deeds of these people, one Filipina caught my attention in doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

I saw this clip posted on Instagram few minutes ago by Paula Peralejo (@paulatheexplorer) doing the epic challenge. Of course, it looks common seeing this. What caught my attention was her clear explanation of what ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is all about and what we should know about it.

Here’s her caption:

“#ALSIceBucketChallenge accepted. Nominated by @mishyco_ . To widen the circle, I’d like to nominate the people who often leave beautiful comments on my IG: @prettyliljoy @lournepcgun @ralz_12dos @lilmissmadel @vashlingan and all of you who read this, feel free to join!

Things You Need To Know Before You Judge:

1. This campaign was made to raise awareness about ALS (and gather funds for it). I personally found out about ALS because of a friend’s post.

2. ALS is a disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the motor neurons die, muscle action is affected, often leading to total paralyzation for ALS patients. ALS occurs throughout the world and can strike anyone.

3. Once nominated, you can either do the challenge or donate. In reality, many have done both. As of late August 2014, almost 80M was raised (in just a month!), and over 1.7 million people have donated.

4. The Ice Bucket Challenge participants pour a bucket of ice of cold water to simulate the paralysis felt by ALS patients, atleast for a

brief second.

5. To date, there is no cure for ALS. This is where donations come in. As more funds are raised, more money is directed to research for ALS.

6. To learn more, head on to http://www.alsa.org. You can donate directly there, too!

7. Critics are quick to point that this has become a circus for people to “join the trend”. Right on, folks. That’s one of the goals – for it to trend to raise awareness. So yes, maybe some people do it just for “fun”, but you cannot discount the fact that these people have also helped spread awareness to others who, at one point or another, would either spread awareness, too, or donate, or both.

Instagram says my caption is too long, so I’ll put the others (8-11) on the comments section! ☺

8. Critics also point out that while Africa/drought-stricken areas are in dire need of water, here we are wasting it. 1) There are many ways to make water potable. 2) Not doing the challenge does not equate to helping Africa/drought-stricken places with their shortage. 3) Not everyone uses new water. Mine came from frozen pool water, put back in the pool 😂. 4) If you are really concerned about Africa/drought-stricken areas, you can donate or help out there, too. No one is stopping you. Actually, I urge you to help there, too. 5) You probably use the same amount of water to do things for fun, like, to chill your drinks for your upcoming party for example.

9) People are also voicing out now their concern on the involvement of ALSA Org to embryonic stem cell research. I say, go ahead, research about it, so that you can make your informed choice. Whatever your decision is will be respected. You can donate somewhere else, and urge people to donate there, too. At the end of the day, you have the power to help in a way you approve of.

10) Whether you’re pro or against the challenge, as long as you talk about it, you also help spread the word. So in behalf of ALS patients, thank you!

11) I am not really the type to mention the donations we make, but to save critics time, yes, I did the challenge AND donated, too! I am doing the challenge to keep the trend going, which could mean more donations for the org.

Hope this post helps you understand the challenge more.❤️ PS: If you will do this, I suggest you take a bath right after to avoid getting sick!”

I guess, this is already fair enough to understand what exactly ALS and the Ice Bucket Challenge is all about and what can we do to support and help the ALS foundation and share it to others so everyone will be at least aware of this disease.

Well, I am actually looking forward to do the challenge.. if someone will nominate me. Hehehe just kidding!

Hope this helps you. 🙂
